(15) Ancillary Practice

Recreate a Film Poster
In class we were given the task of recreating a famous film poster. In the two hours we had to take a photo and edit it to look as similar as possible to the original poster. We were randomly put into pairs, and I was paired with Noah. The film poster we were assigned to recreate was the poster for the film 'her', directed by Spike Jonze.

The rules we had to follow during the task were the following:

  • We were not allowed to appear in our own product or include anyone else from our media class
  • It had to be completed within the two hour session
  • It had to be as accurate to the real poster as possible, without editing it directly from the original poster
The first thing we agreed to do was to cast the model. This seemed fairly easy at first, however, we found that there were little people we knew during a free and, therefore, had to do spend a little while scouting someone out. We eventually found James Vardigans who agreed to be our model. We took several pictures, this is the one we settled with:

Noah assumed the role of editing, having had more experience as an art multimedia student. He used two programs to edit: Paint Tool Sai (to edit the visuals) and Photoshop (to insert the text).

This is the image produced in Paint Tool Sai:

After importing the image into Photoshop, the title and credits needed to be added. Because the fonts were fairly simple, we could use default fonts to recreate the look. When it came to the task, we decided to alter the names on the poster to create a more fun, light-hearted look. While James' name was still featured, Noah decided to add the following names:

  • Terry Foldyflaps
  • Draven
  • Chessup Teeks
  • Noob-Noob
Something a little difficult to add was the gradient line along the top and bottom. To do this, we cut around a small selection of the image with the selection tool and added a gradient inside. This is the final image we produced:

While the end product isn't incredibly accurate, we did only have an hour to finish it. It was definitely a fun exercise to do and served as good practice for our real coursework.
